Festival focus - Court Number 5

Court Number 5 tells a story that is all too familiar with many children. A custody hearing, where two sisters, Bella and Anna, are faced with a life changing decision, whether to stay with their mum or their dad.
Mickey Cornwall paints a convincing picture of a teenage girl caught in the middle of a war between parents. Where the child's thoughts and feelings are often forgotten and the court case becomes more about revenge than doing what’s best for your children. The vitriol the girls mother throws towards their father, clearly cuts Bella far deeper than the person the comments were intended for. Her subtle glances and quite tone throughout the film speaks volumes on the negative impact the situation is having on her, juxtaposing her twin sister who seems almost shut off from the situation completely. The final shot of Bella sitting isolated and alone as her family members demand she put others before herself is powerful and perfectly illustrates how quickly a child can become a victim of their parents divorce.
