Festival Focus - green Lanes

Güni Koçak presents a unique family drama in his film ‘Green Lanes’, which sees a Muslim family torn apart by the loss of a son and brother. Koçak paints a realistic picture of how grief can often divide a family, leading to isolation and resentment. We follow Yusuf as he has to confront his past for the sake of his relationship and must reunite with his parents despite his own doubts.

Koçak provides an interesting family dynamic within his short, creating convincing conflict between his characters. We able to infer the distance between Yusuf and his parents through his mothers nightmares, her inner heartache at becoming disconnected from her child. The tension that bubbles between Yusuf and his father is also extremely realistic, Yusuf’s apathetic tone perfectly illustrates the idea that he’s had to endure critical comments from his father for years. Green Lanes is an interesting film which brilliantly explores grief, how if effects people differently and how it can so often lead to fractured relationships.
