Festival Focus - Lead Belly

Lead Belly is an extremely moving and thought-provoking film which highlights the hardships veterans face when leaving the forces. The film follows Mark as he struggles with PTSD and eventually homelessness. The portrayal of PTSD within Lead Belly is both respectful and realistic, without shying away from the most brutal aspects of the illness. It highlights how the smallest of things can trigger flashbacks, a water bottle or glaring convenience store lights, and how it is often so difficult to be brought back to reality. It also brings attention to how some of our most vulnerable citizens are often left to fend for themselves, alone and forgotten, emphasising our duty to care for our veterans.

The role of Mark is played by Jamie Lomas who is able to encapsulate a man struggling with PTSD perfectly. Every expression on his face flawlessly highlights the pain for which his character is feeling, allowing you to recognise the terrible hardship Mark has faced. Indeed, Lomas gives an extremely powerful performance which makes you feel sympathetic for his character and leaves you welling with emotion. Lomas is complimented by the wonderful acting abilities of Sammy Winward, who paints a perfect picture of a caring ex-wife who herself is struggling with the effects of Marks PTSD. Truly, Lead Belly is an excellently crafted, yet tragic story that is only enhanced by the wonderful acting talents of its main cast.
