Festival Focus - Lets Talk About George

The film ‘Let’s talk about George’ presents an extremely hard-hitting depiction of a man grappling with severe mental health issues. From the opening of the film we are able to gather that George is struggling. The focus on George’s pained expressions instantly indicates that something is wrong, when paired with his depressingly mundane morning routine and daytime drinking we can clearly conclude that George is likely battling depression. Nick Nevern perfectly highlights how a single event can lead to mental decline and can eventually lead a person to turn to the comfort of drugs and alcohol. That mental illness is often a vicious cycle that cannot be broken free of.

The film also uniquely highlights the importance we often play in another’s story. It stresses how a negative comment can be a persons last straw and how we need to abandon the notion that men should remain silent about their feelings. It asks us to be kind, as we often don’t know what others are going through and perfectly illustrates how simply asking someone if they’re ok can make a world of difference. With a moving script and a subtle score that draws upon the characters sadness, Let’s Talk About George is a poignant film that ‘talks’ about a serious topic that effects so many.
