Festival Focus - Phase 5

Every year we have an extremely strong contingent of Spanish submissions, and this year is no exception. In total we have ten films from Spain in the final programme and I would encourage you to watch every one of them. Amongst the very best is Phase 5 directed by Carles Valdés, a superb short about the process of grief.

Actress Raquel Alcalá is excellent as Anna, a bereaved woman who has lost her partner to a motorcycle accident. There’s real palpable anguish in the physical performance of Alcalá as she portrays someone going through each stage of grief – from denial to anger, to finally something approaching the first steps of acceptance and healing.
Phase 5 is showing on Wednesday 25TH May at 1.30PM

Set in a small Durham town follows TJ (Dave Turner) a publican who lends a hand to local community-based charities, through an incident TJ strikes up a friendship with Yara (Ebla Mari) a Syrian Refugee who has a passion for photography. Yara persuades TJ to open the back room of his pub, to allow people within the community to bond and enjoy cuisine from different nationalities.
